VfB Stuttgart : the history
Verein für Bewegungsspiele Stuttgart 1893 e.V., commonly known as VfB Stuttgart or simply Stuttgart, is one of the most prestigious, historic and widely supported football clubs in Germany. Founded in 1893 in the city of Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg, the club is one of the country's most important sporting institutions. Its traditional white and red colours and the famous Württemberg deer featured on the crest are deeply rooted symbols of German football. Thanks to its rich tradition, passionate fanbase and numerous achievements, VfB Stuttgart occupies a prominent place in German football history.
Throughout its history, the club has featured some of Germany's finest footballers. Among its most notable figures are Fritz Walter (the Stuttgart striker, not to be confused with the Kaiserslautern legend of the same name), alongside Karl Allgöwer, Guido Buchwald, Jürgen Klinsmann, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Sami Khedira, Mario Gómez, Timo Werner and Joshua Kimmich. The club is also renowned for its excellent youth academy, which has produced many players who went on to star in the Bundesliga and for the German national team.
VfB Stuttgart possesses one of the most impressive trophy collections in German football. The club has won five German championships, multiple DFB-Pokal titles, and a German Super Cup. Among its most memorable triumphs are the 1983-84 Bundesliga title under Helmut Benthaus and especially the 2006-07 championship, won by a young and exciting team coached by Armin Veh and led on the field by Mario Gómez, Sami Khedira and Cacau. Internationally, Stuttgart reached the 1988-89 UEFA Cup Final and the 1997-98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final, confirming its status as a strong force in European football.
The club plays its home matches at the historic MHPArena (formerly known as the Neckarstadion, Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion and Mercedes-Benz Arena), one of Germany's most important football venues. The stadium has hosted matches during the 1974 FIFA World Cup, the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA European Championships. Thanks to its remarkable tradition, numerous trophies and outstanding youth development system, VfB Stuttgart remains one of the most respected and representative clubs in German football.
