1. Fußball-Club Nürnberg Verein für Leibesübungen e.V., commonly known as 1. FC Nürnberg or simply Nürnberg, is one of the oldest and most prestigious football clubs in Germany. Founded on 4 May 1900 in the city of Nuremberg, Bavaria, the club played a crucial role in the development of German football and was for many decades one of the country's most successful teams. Its traditional red and white colours symbolize the club's identity, while the famous nickname "Der Club" ("The Club") reflects the historical respect and status Nürnberg enjoys within German football.
Throughout its history, the club has featured many legendary players. Among its most representative figures are Max Morlock, a German football icon and member of the 1954 FIFA World Cup-winning team, alongside Andreas Köpke, Marek Mintál, Heinz Strehl, Hans Kalb and Dieter Nüssing. Morlock, in particular, is widely regarded as the greatest player in the club's history and remains a beloved figure among Nürnberg supporters.
FC Nürnberg was one of the dominant forces in German football before the creation of the Bundesliga in 1963. The club won nine German championships, a total that stood as a national record for many years. Its golden era stretched from the 1920s through the 1960s, when Nürnberg regularly competed for and won major national honours. The club's last league title came in 1967-68, but the following season brought one of the most remarkable episodes in German football history, as Nürnberg became the first reigning German champion to be relegated. Despite this setback, the club remained an important force in German football and also captured several DFB-Pokal titles, most recently in 2006-07.
The club plays its home matches at the Max-Morlock-Stadion, one of Germany's most historic football venues, originally opened in 1928. The stadium hosted matches during both the 1974 FIFA World Cup and the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and remains one of Bavaria's most important sporting landmarks. Thanks to its century-long tradition, impressive trophy collection and major contribution to the development of German football, 1. FC Nürnberg continues to be one of the most respected and representative clubs in Germany.
